How Atlanta's Carmageddon/Snowpocalypse Impacted Us

First of all, we are all home safe and sound and have been since last night around 6:20 p.m. The day began totally normal, as in Austin drove in to work and me and Beckett  had our morning at home and then left the house around 10:30 a.m., swung by the drycleaners, and then went to the 11 a.m. class at the gym. At noon when my class ended I checked my phone and saw that my mother-in-law had texted saying it was snowing in Birmingham - weird! I got Beckett at 12 p.m. and saw out the window at the gym that it was snowing in Atlanta - brrr! I decided to skip our Walgreen's errand and go straight home. Beckett had lunch then went down for a nap, and then I started baking cupcakes for an upcoming playdate. Me and my friend Sharon started texting as her and her 2-month-old were planning to come visit us at 3 p.m. after Beckett's nap. She asked if Austin was getting off work early due to the snow and I had no idea so I called him at 1:15 p.m. He was in great spirits, had just had lunch with a colleague and was in his car leaving work as they had gotten dismissed.

Austin's office is 19 miles/6 exits from the house and his commute typically takes anywhere between 30 - 45 minutes up 400N. We figured he'd be home by 2 p.m., maybe even 2:30 p.m. at the latest. But it took him 2 hours to get to 400N (this is normally a 5-minute drive, maybe). He was like 'Kel, I have water, I have food, I have my long coat and my ski shell, I have my gloves, and I have audio books. I'm staying on the highway and I will get home, it's just going to take a while.' It did. We talked on and off all day, I texted with his mom, my mom, my neighbors and friends. Me and Beckett turned on Channel 11 which covered the snow storm all day.

He ended up getting home at 6:20 p.m., so 19 miles in a little over 5 hours, 4.5 hours longer than normal. I don't know how he did it. I'm just not that patient. I would have pulled off. I would have freaked out. But he just patiently and persistently steadied the course and I'm so proud of him. Even when he got to our exit he plugged on past it as there is a big 'up' hill to get to our house, so he figured if he took the next exit he could go down the hill vs. up it. Great idea, but the roads were already icing at this point and the exit was blocked by cars who all spun out trying to get up a small hill. So he cut off, went through an office park, and managed to get to our street and go up the hill and get home! Seeing him pull in was wonderful!

While I was like Austin, this is CRAZY, 5 hours??!!, he ended up being one of the lucky ones as many of our friends were stranded. I reached out to my mom's group and found that lots of mommies and daddies couldn't get home and were staying overnight in hotel lobbies, their cars, Home Depot, etc. And this was going on in Birmingham, too, friends stranded at CVSs, Publix, their offices, having to abandon their cars due to no more gas and no gas available for purchase, walking to get their kids at daycare, friends whose kids had to spend the night at daycare - my father-in-law even walked home from work! Many friends were also trapped in their work parking decks, unable to leave if they wanted to. We were glued to the TV like OMG what can we do?! This is crazy, we are so fortunate, wow...

We got Beckett to bed around 7:30 p.m. then went back to the news and phones to check in on family and friends. Around 9:45 p.m. Austin was talking to his Dad and I got a text from one of my AutoTrader.com co-workers and friends Jenn. She was on 400N at our exit and they had closed 400! A tractor trailer had jackknifed blocking the road and it wasn't safe - she couldn't make it home but COULD make it to our house so we told her to come on over! Poor thing had been in the car since 3:30 p.m., hadn't stopped even to use the bathroom as she just sat and sat to get 15 miles in 7 hours. We were so glad she reached out and that we were able to help just by being home and having water, wine, food and a guest room! While the circumstances were beyond unfortunate we enjoyed catching up with her and having her stay over. She was able to get home safely today just after lunch - we are so happy for her!

So that's our story. Me and Beckett were here, home and safe. Austin made it home after traveling 19 miles in 5 hours inching up 400N. And we were able to be there for Jenn -  it was the least we could do - so glad we were here and so glad she called and was able to get here safely.

What a nightmare. I am just in disbelief about this whole thing. It was such a normal day until it wasn't, you know? It's shocking and scary and I truly can't describe how fortunate I feel to know, right now, that all of my loved ones are safe and warm. I hope the same can be said for all in Alabama and Georgia ASAP.

I realize this is somewhat of a weird post but I had to get this all out here just to like read it again and be like 'this happened.' K - i'm out. Hope you're all safe and seriously considering putting together a small emergency car kit (if you don't have one already) - I know I am! And in case you're wondering, the poodles LOVE the snow, especially Reuben! (no, I'm not being sarcastic - it's adorable seeing them play out there!)

Week 50: 7 Days of Beckett

Day 344 (1/18);  out for Mexican with Mom & Dad! She does GREAT at this restaurant just keeping to herself and eating beans, rice, chicken and avocado!
Day 345 (1/19); "walking" around at Harper's First Birthday party!
Day 346 (1/20); cooking up  a mess in her kitchen! She loves it - I add things to it all the time, the latest being these little tupperwares from Ikea that are too small for anything we use but perfect for her little baby hands!
Day 347 (1/21); I have so many pictures from this day of her crawling and playing but this one of her peering from around her pack & play where she was playing with off limits stuff like her wipes & cream cracks me up; I'll go "Beckett" and she looks around the corner - heart it!
Day 348 (1/22); the easiest shots to get - bath time! She loves it so much, especially sucking on wash cloths, her bath book and bath toys (and splashing around trying to stand up - eek!)
Day 349 (1/23); Mimi visited from Wednesday - Saturday! They had so many fun times and she was a lifesaver enabling me to get so much birthday prep done as well as not-Beckett-friendly errands - thank you, Mimi Michelle!!
Day 350 (1/24); Beckett back in bath drinking water from her wash cloth. Sigh! This girl is a nut! I think it feels good on her growing teeth!
Likes:

  • her kitchen; everything about it, especially the little pans
  • her walkers; especially when we chase her around on one while she's on one - so cute
  • climbing the stairs - she LOVES it and smiles so hard
  • standing - she loves to be up and prefers to be holding a small toy or her sippy cup; normally she was against something (a stool, the couch, a walker, the wall) but this week she stood on her own a lot more and even took a step - eep!
  • her new activity space/room - she seemed to like having a new space in the house to play in (helps break up the day when we play in the morning in the living room; midday at the gym's toddler room and then afternoon in the activity room!)
  • books - give this girl a book bin and she'll take each out and turn the pages on them over and over!
  • things that aren't hers - the dog's bandannas, towels, water bottles - if it's free she loves it! haha
  • giving high fives!
  • waving hi
  • shaking her head from side to side
  • dancing while someone claps their hands or sings
  • fingerplays like the itsy bitsy spider are HUGE this week (she'll "dance" when you do it!)
  • throwing all of her food on the floor. not awesome.
  • her new 3 o'clock snack! (we used to just do 3 meals but now she has snacks, too -she seems to enjoy it!)
  • eating the inside of her crib - teething girl!
Dislikes:
  • having her diaper changed (it's starting to get ridiculous - like she freaks OUT!)
  • having iPhones, remotes, etc. taken from her (same as last few weeks!)
  • her baby doll - we laugh because she'll take her baby out of the stroller and put her on the floor then take off with the stroller (like nope, not coming with me baby!)
  • teething - another new tooth in - up to 7 teeth (4 on top and 3 on bottom - the new one is on bottom!)

Her Week in a Nutshell:

  • Saturday: Errands with Mom & Dad and out to eat - Mexican!
  • Sunday: Harper's First Birthday Party!
  • Monday: Toddler Room at Gym with Mom
  • Tuesday: Toddler Room at Gym with Mom
  • Wednesday: Toddler Room at Gym with Mom; Visit from Mimi!; out to eat with Mimi, Mom & Dad for Mexican again - yum!
  • Thursday: Day with Mimi while Mom ran non-Beckett friendly errands and while Mom & Dad went out to eat Italian with the Blancos!
  • Friday: Day with Mimi while Mom took puppers for shots; family night in with Mimi, Mom & Dad

Week 49: 7 Days of Beckett

Day 337 (1/11); Beckett is unsure about her new foods, including a black bean and cheese quesadilla
Day 338 (1/12); Beckett is still loving bathtime - guaranteed smiles!
Day 339 (1/13); Sweet baby girl taking her nighttime bottle - hard to believe that in just a few weeks she won't have any more bottles - crazy! :(
Day 340 (1/14); Walking behind her push toy, another wonderful loan from cousin Dane!
Day 341 (1/15); Eating saltines, her new favorite! She had never had crackers or anything like that but when she got the viral intestinal infection the pediatrician strongly recommended we give her saltines with pedialyate. We did of course and she just loved them!
Day 342 (1/16); Beckett is LOVING her new kitchen from friends Maggie & Bonnie; I went to Ikea today and got her some stuffed vegetables and kids pots & pans - adorable! I also got her some small tupperware - she loves to eat it! haha
Day 343 (1/17); I seriously can't get her away from this kitchen! She loves it, even if she's mid-clothing change she'll crawl away from me hyper fast to get to the kitchen and bang on her mini pots and pans!
Likes:
  • Push toys (her stroller & doll)
  • Opening and closing cabinets and boxes
  • Flipping the light switches
  • Her glow worm and twilight turtle shining lights in her dark room before naptime
  • The kitchen - everything about it - opening and closing the stove and drawers, taking the (empty) spice jars tupperware out, pressing the buttons on the stove; she also loves her new pots and pans!
  • Her fisher price activity puzzle; she especially likes the heart-shaped mirror
  • Playing with everything in her change pad supplies (wipes, diapers, diaper paste,, her gold shoes) - she knows this area isn't for her so it makes her want to be there SO much
  • Her standard meals: Breakfast (egg, chicken, black beans, avocados and bananas/blueberries); Lunch (turkey, cheese, chickpeas, sweet peas, corn, strawberries); Dinner (sweet potato, chicken, green beans, carrots); she also likes saltines!
Dislikes:

  • Nothing new - same stuff (e.g., having the iPhone taken away, having her diaper changed, having clothes put on or off over her head, etc.).
Her Week in a Nutshell:
  • Saturday: Family day in while Beckett continued to recover; Night with Dad while mom went to Baby Blanco Gender Reveal (it's a boy! John Andrew!!)

  • Thursday: Toddler room at the gym
  • Friday: Toddler room at the gym; family night!

Beckett Loves Berries

She has been eating strawberry purée for a while, but she loves whole strawberries, too, and as of yesterday she enjoys blueberries! I mix them together and she loves them both - can't wait for her to try raspberries and blackberries!

Loving Push Toys

She really can't get enough and is SO proud of herself when goes across a room! This toy is one of Dane's and she really likes it. We'll put her books on it and Austin will call her a little librarian with her book cart. haha

Week 48: 7 Days of Beckett

Day 330 (1/4); After a short nap in the morning and a non-nap in the car and a downtown Denver lunch before converting from a tahoe to a van and then going to the airport and kinda sleeping before being woken up at security, then getting delayed 3 hours we were FINALLY on the plane home and surprise, no one wanted to sit with a baby so Beckett got her own seat! (Yes, I'm exhausted! LOL)
Day 331 (1/5); Beckett stayed on Mountain Time Sunday being that we didn't get in until 2 a.m. (OMG... about 6 hours later than expected); we all stayed in our pajamas and did laundry and got the house back in order, bathed pups and cooked after a quick trip to the grocery store!
Day 332 (1/6); Cutie girl Beckett playing without her pants on! She's wearing her new 'I'm Difficult' black diamond t-shirt from Breck playing with one of her favorite Christmas presents - stroller & dolly from her Gigi - believe it or not, an hour after this picture was taken she was sick with tummy trouble- it came QUICK; we followed the doctor's instructions and started her on G2 and water (they said it was a 12- to 24-hour bug)
Day 333 (1/7); Sick baby got LOTS of extra sleep; she stayed in PJs all day recovering and seemed so much better already!
Day 334 (1/8); Beckett seemed 100% and hadn't been sick so we kept the playdate; she ate all of her food just great and we went to Chuck E Cheese where she rode her first little ride with Gavin! All was good, until 3:30 p.m. when she got sick again... off to the pediatrician as this is clearly not the 24-hour bug as if it were it would have been over like we thought!
Day 335 (1/9); They said she had a viral intestinal infection and we would likely get it; at midnight, I got it and Beckett and I spent the day sharing a sleeve of saltines and pedilyate. The only thing worse than being sick is having your baby sick; the only thing worse than having your baby sick is you being sick, too. It was a long day.
Day 336 (1/10); Both of us girls feel better! Not 100% but more rested and less weak - we're on the mend - she was even able to keep down apple sauce & bananas (what the doctor recommended)
Likes:
  • greeting everyone on the plane - she was seriously so cute bouncing up and down waving and saying hi to people as they got on the plane
  • being tickled - the little spot above her knee when squeeze is SO FUNNY to her
  • clapping balls together or puzzle pieces or any two things really!
  • G2 blue flavorand pedialyate from a syringe
  • Saltines; she had her first one this week as a rec from the pediatrician and she seemed to really enjoy them
  • Her glowworm - it has become a part of her pre-nap routine - we turn all the lights off and play a few tunes while glow worm (and Beckett!) light up. It's kind of adorable :)
  • Walkers - she is very big on walking; we even got down the walker Aunt Devon and  Cousin Dane brought over (a few weeks ago she couldn't quite get it - now she can!)
  • the icemaker - it fascinates her very much
  • turning on the lights - she has gotten super quick with the light switches!
Dislikes:
  • having her food withheld like the doctor suggested (said to do 1 oz. every 30 minutes to decrease the likelihood of vomiting) Beckett freaked OUT though so I gave her more at a time and thankfully she didn't throw up again
  • the little tea cup ride at Chuck E Cheese; it's not entirely fair as I later found out she was sick but she did seem pretty miserable on the ride towards the end :(
  • shoes; she continues to take them all off; Meghan and Harper brought her two pairs of shoes and they immediately were removed!
  • her sippy cup - this week, with her being sick, we 100% reverted back to bottles and I held her and fed her each one - back to sippy cups on 1/11
I would like to go on the record and say that Beckett's 10th month was by far and away the hardest month! Poor girl had a runny nose 3/4 of the month, was still teething/drooling/etc., got sick for the first time (double ear infection) then got sick for the second time (viral intestinal infection aka stomach bug/vomiting/diarrhea). She has certainly been keeping us on our toes this month, not to mention it already being a bit of a crazy month with extra To-Dos like shopping and wrapping for gifts, decorating our home, attending multiple holiday parties, cooking more than normal, hosting and attending family Christmas Eve and Christmas get togethers, prepping for the weeklong ski trip and Beckett's first flight, and beginning prep work on Beckett's first birthday party! So, crazy month in general with or without a baby, but throw a baby in the mix, and a sick baby at that, it was a lot!

Now, I LOVE this sweet girl - I think that's clear, but I want to be honest and say that I just found this 10th month with Becks (even without the holidays, vacation, etc.) to just be more tough than the others. She's just so mobile and it's an adjustment to be prepared for her to leap out of your arms or faceplant off a toy. She's so adorably, but dangerously, clumsy and it breaks my heart when she falls and I feel like a horrible mom - eek! Anyway, great month seeing baby girl have so many firsts and being so proud of her for doing so great on the flights and ski trip, but tough 'growing' month, probably exasperated by her two sick bouts. Here's to month 11 - I can't believe we're about to have a one-year-old! WOW!

Week 47: 7 Days of Beckett

Day 323 (12/28); Just handing at the brewery in downtown Breckenridge! Beckett did great on her first day of travel from Atlanta to Denver!
Day 324 (12/29); Post-bath in the big tub! She was quite the trooper during the trip and even had her own room - the laundry room! (sounds bad but it was huge and ventilated and perfect for her pack 'n play!)
Day 325 (12/30); Family shot from Mimi - Beckett was playing on her iPad - she still loves the stars game! I thought she would enjoy iPad a lot on this trip but she still prefers things like water bottles, socks, etc.
Day 326 (12/31); Beckett loved playing with ski gear - especially helmets, goggles, gloves, socks, etc. She LOVES her Uncle E as he leaves his things out - many, many times we found her playing with this tshirts, phone, peaks pass, etc.!
Day 327 (1/1); first day of the year! Me and Mimi attempted to take Beckett on a stroller ride in the snow. It lasted all of 4 minutes and took place in the driveway and about 30 feet in front of the condo... SO cold; this picture was actually taken on the balcony (yes, we strolled her stroller out the sliding door next to the hot tub and attempted to get a smile shot of Beckett outside - it was snowing!)
Day 328 (1/2); Beckett and her Mimi got a visit from Aunt Missy, Uncle George and their puppers, Coco and Abby!
Day 329 (1/3); Beckett went back to downtown Breck for the second time during the trip. It was bitter cold with icy wind and it was all we could do to stop on a corner and get pictures! Once this pic was taken, we got her and her friend Peyton onesies at a downtown t-shirt shop then headed home to pack for our voyage back to Atlanta!
Likes:
  • spending the week with her Mimi - Michelle spent all day, every day with her and said Beckett did so good eating her bottles and solids and just playing! Every time we got home from skiing the two of them were at the high chair having dinner - so sweet! We can't thank her enough for giving us the opportunity to ski 5 whole days sans Beckett!
  • meeting her Aunt Missy and Uncle George, and seeing their puppies - she loves dogs! I think she missed Reuben and Remy as much as us. :(
  • playing with ski gear
  • her new B. toys keys
  • banging together anything, especially 2 mini dasani bottles in-flight
  • eating paper (oy)
  • watching the hot tub guy service the hot tub
  • snow (so long as it doesn't hit her in the face)
  • the wheels on the bus mother goose video (thanks, YouTube - you saved us from a screaming car ride on 1/3)
  • the toys from Breck Tots (where we rented from) - she especially liked the paper books (which she tried to eat), a pop-up Fisher Price toy, a car with teething keys, etc.
  • the fireplace - we covered it in blankets and pillows but she loved pulling up on it and cruising to the coffee table then to the couch to get iPhones (she couldn't get over that instead of the usual 3 iPhones in our house there were 8 AND Uncle Ty's blackberry which she ate... a lot)
  • changing the channel on the remote (it was a sensitive remote and she turned it off many a football game)
  • the airport/plane/etc. - she loved the people watching! On the way back she had her own chair and loved "standing" by the window seeing outside and bouncing up and down on our laps "talking" and greeting every. single. person. who boarded the plane.
  • her amoxicillin - Beckett seriously had no issue at all taken this yummy sweet medicine!
  • her plates - every morning we would make her an egg that she would have with black beans, avocado, and bananas; then we would leave lunch plates (turkey, cheese, green beans & apples) and dinner plates (chicken, sweet potatoes, garbanzo beans & apples) - she gobbled everything up!
  • taking her socks off and playing with them (i.e., eating them)
  • standing - she stood a lot each day for several seconds at a time -not sure if she realized she was doing it but she was!
  • closing pop up toys - she can't get enough and smiles big when it clicks shut
Dislikes:
  • Sleeping on planes (took her about 10 minutes of crying it out before she would fall asleep in our arms - me on the way there and Austin on the way back)
  • Not being able to crawl around on planes
  • Being force to sleep in the car while everyone else is having fun/talking
  • Not being allowed to roam free at the condo - we had an area created by two couches, a coffee table, a fireplace, her activity table and a big basket - it worked brilliantly but she got onto us pretty quick and realized her freedom wasn't so free!
  • Bananas - for some reason she hated the bananas in Colorado - she has eaten them since being home but wouldn't eat them there
Her Week in a Nutshell:
  • Saturday: Big day of travel from 7 a.m. when she woke up for her 9:30 a.m. flight to the first time on marta, to her first flight, arriving in Breck for lunch/dinner at the Breckenridge Brewery, then an evening with Dad & Uncle Elliot while her Mom, Mimi, Poppa and Uncle Tyler went to the grocery store
  • Sunday: First day of fun with Mimi while the rest of the family skied!
  • Monday: Second day of fun with Mimi; family stayed in all evening while Chef Cordell came (he seemed to like Beckett - he has a baby son!)
  • Tuesday: Third day of fun with Mimi; New Year's Eve (no one made it to midnight mountain time!)
  • Wednesday: New Year's Day photo shoot with Mimi & Mom; day of lounging around and playing with Mom, Mimi and her uncles; night with Dad while Mom went out to the pizzeria with the family

Week 46: 7 Days of Beckett

Day 316 (12/21); Beckett loves her cabinet in the kitchen, especially in the morning when I'm making our breakfast (her: eggs, black beans, avocado & chicken; me: eggs, sausage, mushrooms)
Day 317 (12/22): We got a visit from Mike and Ann who brought Beckett these adorable PJs as well as a book and a cute piece of ride-on luggage! I was under the weather and didn't get pictures, but we sure enjoyed seeing them, as well as the Porters who came up to see them, too!
Day 318 (12/23); smiley girl over breakfast trying to get the iPhone from me!
Day 319 (12/24); Beckett's first Christmas Eve - we have family day that morning, then at 2:30 Austin's parents and brothers arrived, and we headed over to Jane and Charles' at 3 p.m. - great to see all of the Martins for a few hours before we headed back and did the Martin Family Christmas at our house
Day 320 (12/25); Beckett on Christmas Day with the wonderful gifts she received throughout the holidays, including from her friends Hanna/Abby, her puppers, her parents, Mike & Ann and the Martins. Porter & Gigi Christmas took place later that day when they arrived around 11 a.m. and stayed until dinner - great day!
Day 321 (12/26); Beckett eating one of her new favorite foods/mixes: quinoa & garbanzo beans!
Day 322 (12/27); Beckett got her mobile down - time to take it away (she was very proud of herself - I went in and found her passed out next to it - hilarious).
Another great week with Beckett. So fun to have everyone around to see her new skills, hear her "talk", see her gobble up so many foods, etc. She is getting so big!

Likes:

  • Eating - you can't stop this girl from gobbling up all of her finger foods!
  • Getting into everything - she was ALL over the place at Jane and Charles - lunging at their Christmas Tree, eating Christmas cards from the mantle - you name it - she was everywhere!
  • Squirming - she will try her hardest to get out of your arms and onto the floor to crawl so fast she huffs and puffs
  • Christmas wrapping - all of it, ribbons, paper, bags - she loves it!
  • quinoa & chickpeas
  • Her new toys, especially her stroller & doll as well as the Fisher Price puzzle
  • Being the center of attention - she really lit up opening presents and having everyone watch her!
Dislikes:
  • bubble wrap (seems to scare her)
  • loud noises (e.g., the mixer)
  • the usuals: car seats, diaper changes, etc.
  • having the remote control, laptop, iPad, iPhone, etc. taken from her

Beckett & Aunt Missy

Love this picture of Beckett and her Great Aunt Missy! Michelle's sister, Missy, and her husband, George, drove over from Monument, Colorado, to visit with us here in Breckenridge. They brought adorable Coco and Abby, their sweet puppies, and spent a long afternoon with Michelle, Paul and Beckett. Me and Austin came in for lunch to see them and enjoyed catching up and seeing Beckett get to spend time with her aunt who has gone out of her way to send something to Beckett for every single holiday. Seriously - St. Patrick's Day onesie, monogrammed Easter basket, monogrammed Halloween treat bucket, Christmas ornament - you name it! So thoughtful! Great to see her again and so glad Beckett got to meet her and George, and the pups of course!

Becks in Snow

It's been very cold. VERY. But we knew we wanted to at least get her outside! So while Austin and Paul were out skiing in the ice storm and Elliot and Tyler were in watching football, me and Michelle took her stroller out on the patio which was covered in about 10" of snow and it was snowing! She got to feel the snow and the cold temps - adorable! Then we got bold and wanted to see if we could stroll her down to the shops. Answer? No, but we did stroll around a bit in front of our driveway and when we were taking her out of the stroller to bring her in, Michelle snapped a few shots of me and Beckett that I think came out adorable despite my 'yesterday hair' and 'no make up.' Love my baby girl!
