Our First Full Day

Friday was our first full day. I accidentally slept in until 8 a.m. Going to blame the ambien they prescribed me to sleep which has been absolutely necessary. Austin and Beckett were already in full swing downstairs having eaten breakfast and already playing. We decided our goal would be to go to the pumpkin patch that afternoon if we felt up for it. Beckett was supposed to attend a playdate with friends that day at the Pumpkin Patch and while I definitely wasn't up for that a visit with our family seemed like fun. Unfortunately I wasn't ready - my errands to get her boots and tights had not happened that week so Austin offered to shop with us. Bless him - we aren't the easiest girls to shop with. :)

We headed over to Von Maur as I knew I wanted her to have Minnetonkas. They didn't have her size in those or the uggs, but the Perimeter location did. We went to Stride Rite and thought about going to Perimeter. Stride Rite had an adorable boot and Beckett had so much fun playing with all the shoes - definitely her happy place. We got the boots then headed down to Perimeter - pretty day for a drive anyway. We tried on the Minnetonkas in her size and they just didn't fit right - boo. So we went to Gap and ran a few other errands ultimately finding her tights at Old Navy - awesome with little fox faces. At this point I had cried randomly about 5 times. Not too bad? I just kept thinking about him. And thinking about the nurses telling me he wasn't with us anymore. And thinking about how I didn't feel pregnant anymore but when I saw myself I looked pregnant.

We got home to thoughtful deliveries. Ashely Cerny had left a thoughtful bag filled with muffins, a Halloween activity for Beckett and M&Ms - so sweet. The Johnsons, van Reenens and Fenecks sent over an amazing edible arrangement with our favorite fruits. The Mittelbronns sent over a beautiful fruit basket which included an entire pineapple - yummy. The Blancos, Tuerks and Brown's had Harry & David sent over - meats, cheese, pears, sweets and more - so many goodies. These surprise supportive gifts were just what we needed to get through the afternoon. Beckett gleefully helped us unpack everything and then we had a yummy Greek lunch thanks to the Turmans. Beckett went down for a long nap and then at 3;30 p.m. it was off to the pumpkin patch.

Admittedly, I didn't feel well. Think I may have pushed myself too hard - felt tired, lightheaded, crampy, etc., but I really wanted to go do one of my favorite things - take pictures of my beautiful girl. So we went and we did just that, getting amazing photos, including this one.

After the patch we headed straight home for dinner, bathtime and bedtime. I think I fell asleep at 9? I was just so, so tired and ready for another day to start hoping I felt better the next day. All in all, I think we did a great job staying positive for B and I think she loved the pumpkin patch, especially the haybale set up and the hayride. She is such a special girl.

Getting to Go Home

We arrived at the hospital on Tuesday around noon. We ended up getting home on Thursday around noon. We thought we would get to leave Wednesday morning, but just before giving birth to Owen my fever spiked at 102 and my blood count was in the 20,000's vs. 10,000's so they worried I had an infection which led us on to antibiotics that required numerous rounds that had to be given  8 hours apart. The doctor told us Wednesday morning that in good medicine they couldn't let me leave until 24 hours after the fever spike which was 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, so I really couldn't leave until 11:30 p.m. Wednesday and at that point they would rather turn off all nurse calls so we could have a night of uninterrupted sleep at the hospital and go home refreshed in the morning on Thursday. We were sold - I wanted to be 100% when I saw my Beckett.

My fever went away. The antibiotics worked. My white blood cell count returned to 10,000 and we were given the green light to go home at 11 a.m. Thursday. By this point we had had wonderful, healing hospital visits from my Mom and Austin's brother Tyler Tuesday, Austin's parents, my sister and our minister on Wednesday, and visits from the staff at my OBGYN. And, at this point my mom and Austin's mom and dad were all at our house caring for Beckett. We called them and told them we were on the way. We pulled in the driveway full of our family's cars and walked in through the garage - we could hear Beckett at the door, "Mama? Dada?" Sweet girl opened the door and came out and gave us hugs and kisses - I have never been so happy to see her and to see our family and know that she had been 100% loved by her Aunt Devon, Gigi, Mimi and Poppa while we were away.

Our family offered to stay of course but we knew they had been there for days and all had to resume work and travel plans and honestly, we were fine to go back to the three of us. We dropped off my prescriptions and took B out for sushi. Then at 1 p.m. we put her down for her nap and got in bed with our sweet puppers and rested. I reached out to our neighbors (I take Beckett to their house every Thursday at 3 p.m. to play with their three daughters and I stay with their nanny during that time). I cancelled but their mom and nanny insisted we bring Beckett over anyway and that they would keep her until 5 p.m. so she could see her friends and we could have some time at home alone. The sweetest people. Austin walked her over and their sweet nanny sent me pictures during her visit there. At 4:30 p.m. the Blancos came over with tons of Italian food and several boxes of our favorite candy, sour patch kids. They were what we needed and it was so good to hug them. Austin and Andy walked over to get Beckett at 5 p.m. then we all visited and played with Beckett until 6:30 p.m. Me, Austin and Beckett had playtime, some movie time, bath time and bed time. We closed the door to her room at 7:30 p.m. and got a text - The Turmans were on the way with food and gifts and intended to leave it on our doorstep - we met them outside and invited them in. They brought so much Greek food and their son Lee sent a Halloween gift for Beckett (an adorable Mudpie Halloween tutu and headband) and they got a gift for Owen, a beautiful ceramic baby blue cross Christmas ornament we can hang for him this year. They visited and left around 8:30 p.m. then it was just the two of us, looking at each other feeling so grateful for the amazing support of our family and friends who made our first day back not so scary.

Not to mention, throughout the day messages were pouring in. We wanted to tell as few people as necessary and certainly wanted to avoid anyone asking about the baby not knowing, so several of our family and friends offered to share the news on our behalf - this made all of the difference in the world. Devon shared the news with the Shaws and Michelle with the Martins. Austin's boss John told his co-workers. Gail at the church told the staff at Beckett's school and our ministers. Andrea at the Gym childcare center told the staff (and they insisted on putting me on medical leave refusing to charge us). My friend Erin at the Gym told my Cardio Kickbox instructor Carrie so she could tell the Group Fitness instructors. My friend Sarah told our Mom's group and set up a Meal Train beginning Monday. Then Devon hit the button - sharing the news with Facebook ensuring that everyone, eventually, would know without us having to have any awkward conversations. People have been so sweet and thoughtful - so many notes on our walls, comments on Devon's post, and private messages. So many women, friends of mine from high school, college, etc., reaching out and telling me about their miscarriages and how they coped and offering to talk if/when I ever want to. It's been so nice to feel so much support and reminders that we are going to be okay.

So yes, all in all Day 1 and getting to go home went as absolutely well as it possibly could have. We are feeling very blessed and are trying to be positive but mostly are just so appreciative of our loved ones. It was genuinely priceless knowing that we could fully focus on Owen, my physical recovery, and our initial emotional recovery thanks to Devon, my Mom, and Austin's Mom and Dad. Never did we have to worry about Beckett's care. Devon took her to the park and did artwork with her. Mom and Devon took her to school Wednesday where she went to the pumpkin patch with her classmates and was loved on by Miss Charlotte and Miss Claudia, Austin's parents and my mom had a dance party and attempted a crowded group bathtime - girlfriend is SO loved and it was great being reminded of how amazing our family is and how lucky we are to have them.

I know the days will get harder. I know when things return to "normal" it will be worse. I still cry a lot and struggle with wanting things to go back normal RIGHT NOW to wanting to grieve. I went in the nursery for a bit but am not ready. That's okay. It's Day 1.

Owen's Story

Most of this was written at the hospital between 2 a.m. and 10 a.m. after we met Owen. I couldn't sleep and had my phone so I wrote parts in between an hour here or there of sleep. The next day I added a bit more and Austin helped to make sure it included everything he wanted it too as well. I don't know why but it was like I had to get it all down to remember it all and it felt like the right thing to do for Owen and it made me feel better and has continued to do so. It all happened to quick, so I'm glad we'll have this.

Preparing to give birth was the last thing on my mind. Austin had gone to work. Me and Beckett had our grocery list. I told myself I was overreacting to my stomach cramps which were just round ligament pain. I told Beckett we would go see her baby and then go to the grocery store. We didn't have an appointment but were squeezed in quickly at 9:30 a.m. The midwife didn't hear his heartbeat on the fetal Doppler but said not to worry - my heartbeat may be interfering; they immediately rolled in an ultrasound machine to see the heartbeat. Me and Beckett saw him on the screen - it looked like he was moving around like usual. But he wasn't. He was there and his heart was there but it wasn't blinking, the sign of life. She told us, then another doctor confirmed it - we had lost our baby and no one knew why.

Austin came as soon as he could; Devon did, too. She helped me pack while Austin took Beckett to the playground, then Devon stayed with Beckett while we headed to the hospital to meet Owen 20 weeks early knowing there was no chance of seeing him alive even for a second.

Almost 12 hours later, we delivered Owen Hendrix Martin at 12:36 a.m. on October 22, 2014. He is the tiniest baby - a whole baby but so small, his head not bigger than the circle my thumb and pointer make when making an 'ok' sign. He has 10 little fingers - long like mine, and 10 little toes. He has Austin's teeny nose and favored Beckett in several ways. You could see the start of our family's dark hair and Austin and Beckett's shaped eyebrows. He is beautiful. They crossed his little arms, one over the other, and the first thing we all said was how peaceful he looked, almost like he was smiling, truly. He felt like a soft squishy baby human, but was so quiet.

I was so eager to hold him after delivery my heavy epidural leg fell off the bed hitting the floor with a loud thud - it was the ice breaker we all needed. I was so Mrs. Potato Head with these limbs I couldn't control and didn't even know the loud sound was my leg – I thought some machine had fallen. Laughing didn't feel wrong or disrespectful to Owen, it felt like a relief and let's be honest - we laugh so much together as a family and he has heard us. He's heard us read books and sing songs. He has participated in our dance parties. He is probably sick of the ‘The Wheels on the Bus’ and ‘Frozen’. He went with us to Auburn and Athens and the lake - some of our favorite family places. He heard the love - he heard our family - his Aunt giving him all of his cousins clothes and gear; his Gigi and Mimi shopping for him so eager to spoil our special boy; Beckett practicing "baby" with her dolls to help take care of him, hopefully that was relaxing and not fear-inducing! He heard our doggies - he would have loved them like his sister. He heard our friends always checking on him and asking how we're feeling. He knew, beyond a doubt, that we loved him - he heard the nursery preparations and the name decision making and felt us respond excitedly to his kicks - even Austin got to feel his little kicks. He heard our doctors, midwives and nurses at each exam caring for him - his sister went to his exams, even his last. We know he knew he was loved and we wish he could have lived another 20 weeks so we could show him that love and so he could meet his family who couldn't wait to meet him.

The name Owen was on our potential names list. When they suggested we name him we immediately withdrew from the idea thinking it wasn't for us. Then we changed our minds together - we wanted to do all we could for this little boy. He only had us, this 20 weeks. This was his whole life and he deserved a name and he deserved to be seen. We looked at our potential name list and I read names out loud - Austin immediately reacted to Owen. I did, too. It felt right. I said it sounds like 'oven,' our sweet bun in the oven who lived his whole life inside me. Then Hendrix was in the list and it just suited. He is such a little baby boy Owen.

I didn't have them throw Owen on my belly after delivery like they did Beckett. It didn't seem right - he seemed too little and needed more gentle handling. And I was scared – I wanted Austin to see him first and tell me it was okay. They cleaned him and wrapped him in a towel and I got to hold him - our baby boy. I will never get over how pleasantly surprised I was to see this teeny baby - not scary - just a red, sleeping, peaceful baby with his tiny eyes shut - so vulnerable. I will also remember how bruised his little heart was - purple. I kept thinking we are heartbroken, too, Owen. I talked to him and told him we loved him and how sorry we are that his life ended too soon. Austin held him - he looked so proud of him, but so sad for him, and Owen looked especially small in Austin's arms. We took turns holding him and talking about him and marveling at this little baby boy who just didn't make it - we told him we were ready for him and just so deeply sorry he wouldn't get to experience life in our family. Instead he had a pass straight to heaven. He had gone to church with us almost every Sunday and we knew he would be safe and loved and cared for, just not by us. And that hurt but healed so much.

We cried hard. For him, for us, for our family, for the sudden change that went against our hopes and plans. We don't know why this happened and may never know. We have been reassured it's nothing we did or didn't do. They are running a series of tests on my blood, Owen's body, and the placenta, and will run genetic testing. This all may result in nothing and we are at peace with that as it won't give Owen life.

I don't know how I feel. I cry a lot. I wanted everyone to be wrong. I swung rapidly from thinking of all the things I may have done to inadvertently cause it to feeling foolish for having his nursery so close to completion. Austin struggled with how this is such a private matter, but yet public - something we would need to face as we told our family, friends, co-workers, neighbors that he was no longer with us. I struggle with feeling sorry for myself, feeling like I carried him for 20 weeks, some weeks harder than others. I was visibly showing and cheerfully telling all, strangers included, about our boy due in March. I got an epidural. I was induced. I gave birth. But yet we left the hospital empty handed. This is the hardest pill for me to swallow and makes me want to have a tantrum and say "that's not fair."

We will heal. Holding Owen and spending time making sure we knew that he knew he is loved helped. Feeling so much support from our family and friends has helped. Talking to the nurses and bereavement staff and Chaplains at the hospital helped. Having one of our pastors visit and lead us in a prayer for Owen helped. Getting to see Beckett will help; caring for her in a happy, positive environment where she's not worried about mommy and daddy is essential to us so I'm sure the necessity of maintaining this will help. Knowing, deep down, that we didn't do anything wrong and that Owen wasn't healthy and will feel better in god's hands vs. ours will help. Now I still want to blame something and I want him here with us and I want to be pregnant with him and meet him in March... But I know that breathing deep and reminding myself that Owen will be cared for and trying to focus on the blessings we do have will move me along. I can tell it's going to take a lot of time. I can feel my body resisting moving on and wanting to stay in a negative place and wallow and blame and be counterproductive. But I have faith that we will all move on and me and Austin have been in sync with everything feeling closer than ever.

Pictures didn't feel right. We can't explain it but they didn't. We talked through it and neither of us could wrap our brains around remembering him that way. What did resonate with us was prints. We had his hand and footprints taken and intend to frame and place them in our room. We also had a private cremation so he can always be with us. We want to remember Owen and this feels right for us for now. Will help us remember what a tiny treasure he was.

The nursery will be taken down when we're ready. The crib and double stroller will be returned. It will all happen and it will be hard but we will be okay. Writing this helped. I want to remember as much as I can. I want Owen to have a story, however unfairly brief it may be.

9/20; B at the park with Mom, Dad, and the poodles pretending it's fall!

9/24; B LOVES the dog stairs. They sit at a stool by our bed for the dogs, but when she comes in our room we immediately move it or she'll climb them and try to jump on the bed. Now, she's gotten so used to seeing us move them, that she comes in and moves them herself and sits on them! LOL
9/25; B had a good visit with her Mimi! She said Mimi several times, tried on her shoes, and after she left kept going in the guest room saying "mimi?" Adorable.
